Commentaries // Reflections on ‘Turnhalle’

createAlbum(“Piano II”); – Turnhalle

Commentary by Andrew R. Brown (Music Non Stop)

Hi there, I’m Andrew Brown from Music Non Stop. I’m here to talk a bit about the music you’re listening to. This is a track from Create Album Piano II—our latest release from Music Non Stop. It’s an album of generative music tracks, each rendered on a different digital piano.

In this case, we’ve used the Roland Integra-7, featuring the SuperNATURAL piano sound found in many Roland keyboards. That technology does some modeling between various samples to provide smooth transitions across the range and velocity—it sounds quite lovely.

We’re using a slightly mellow version of the piano sound—the Full Grand 2 preset. Across this album, because they’re solo piano works, we’ve often used more mellow piano sounds. It doesn’t need to stand above an orchestral set—it’s a bit more intimate, which we find suits the music.

This gentle piece is in the style of Erik Satie or other composers from around that time who were interested in subtle, expressive music. It uses a stride piano left hand—often found in more aggressive jazz, but it works well here—and a melody that floats above.

In our generative engine, we’ve really emphasized melodic contour, and I think that’s displayed in this piece. There’s also a lot of expressive performance in the music engine—phrasing, chord progressions, and a bit of looseness in timing for humanisation.

I hope you enjoy this piece. You can listen to a version without my commentary—there are links below. And do check out the other tracks on the album as well. Thanks for your attention.
